BEIJING, BEIJING

Beijing, Beijing is a documentary film about three avant-garde artists living in Beijing – a violently expanding megacity. The film treats alienation and liberation in today's China. Despite the individual differences, they have all chosen to express themselves through art. In this film we meet three of my freinds Zhu Ming, He Chengyao and Zhang Dali.

Zhu Ming moved there after living in an artists’ village, where he was arrested and sent to prison for three months. A dreamer with dozens of projects floating inside his head, he expresses himself through performance. After growing up in a strict family in which he was often abused verbally and physically, Zhu Ming has become somewhat asocial and lives as an outsider.

He Chengyao’s mother fell mentally ill when the artist was only five years old. Soldiers forced her to submit to acupuncture in order to be cured, and the memories of her mother screaming and fighting continue to haunt her. In constant fear of the illness running in the family, He Chengyao fled to Beijing, searching for a healthy life on her own, using art to heal her wounds and free her soul.

After living in exile for six years, Zhang Dali returned to Beijing, where he began to do graffiti art. After attracting the attention of the media, he managed to convince the police that what he did was public art and not vandalism. His art is about people, their identity and roots, as well as economic supremacy and political power. His desire is to communicate with the city, and to influence and participate in social change.
